Coffee Shop Observations vol. 1
This blog is the initial piece of a series of blogs about the coffee shop environment.
Coffee shops have become a part of our daily lives, and we can't seem to live without going to one. I have heard stories of people using these shops as their second home while studying, doing thesis, working etc. This also doesn't those who go to the coffeeshop to drink or socialize.
I'll be tackling these personalities and social classes as we go along. For today, I'll start off with: The Laptop/Ipad User
This has become the majority population of those who stay in a coffee shop. The User is usually a Sales Rep for some company. The User would have either just came from a sales call, or is about to meet one. He/she would need time in a coffee shop to check email and prepare reports or presentations. So why go back to the office, and just spend time doing it in a shop?
The User doesn't just barge into the shop to order and put his bag down. The User has mastered this into an art form, and I have done this as well.
First thing the User does is to scan for a power outlet. Any outlet will do, even the one used for display lights. This requires ninja eyes (scan the room quickly, grasshopper!), tiger stealth (free outlet, charge!) and mother alligator nastiness (this table and this outlet belong to me! This is Sparta!!!!).
When the User is done, order is placed and will proceed to work. Or go on Facebook, whatever he/she fancies. Of course, sales groups (mine included) tend to turn the coffee shop into the extension of their office. So sales meetings become the norm, with everybody hauling their laptops and notebooks for a meeting. While this is normally acceptable, it does tend to eat up the space for other consumers. And they will demand that the wireless connections are working. Thus, it is best to keep ordering, especially if the boss is treating. Also, for goodness sake, bring your Tattoos and Smart Bro USB's if the wireless connection is funky.
So there's a quick look into Laptop Guy, of which I belong to. If there are more observations feel free to comment.
